Vision Accessibility Audit Team

Open Opportunity

About

Ever wonder what you could do to make a lasting difference for people with disabilities? Come help the Maryville Lions Club give local leaders practical feedback about how accessible our public spaces are for people who are blind or have low vision.

Student volunteers will work in pairs to visit places such as parks and downtown areas to record any gaps with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) guidelines.

This is a chance to get out into the community, see familiar places from a completely different perspective, and help create recommendations that could improve safety, independence, and inclusion across Blount County. Along the way, students will build experience in field research, accessibility, report writing, teamwork, and presenting findings to community leaders.

Requirement Details

Students should be dependable, detail-oriented, and willing to commit for one full academic semester. Volunteers should be comfortable working in pairs, conducting field observations in public spaces, using a structured audit checklist, taking clear notes, and participating in meetings and a final presentation. An interest in accessibility, public service, community planning, or disability inclusion is helpful, but no prior experience is required.

Perks
Students gain real-world experience in accessibility, inclusive design, field research, observation, and professional report writing while contributing to a project with lasting community value. They will also strengthen teamwork, problem-solving, public speaking, and communication skills by turning their findings into practical recommendations for local leaders. It is a meaningful opportunity to build a strong resume while helping make public spaces in Blount County safer and easier to navigate for people with visual impairments.
